Design and Development of a Proximity Sensor for Paratrooping and Skydiving

Source

Source summary

Develop a compact body-worn proximity sensor that gives parachutists an audible warning when approaching ground, buildings or other hard surfaces. The source seeks operation over the stated descent range, irrespective of body orientation, in day/night and adverse conditions including fog and dust. It must be rugged, water-resistant and battery-powered for a full jump with reserve. These are unvalidated safety requirements, not assurance that all-weather detection is achievable.
