The idea
Address underrepresentation in biomedical data through locally generated datasets and predictive models.
Why this is interesting
- The article argues that Indian populations are underrepresented in biomedical data, so locally generated datasets could support models others cannot easily build. Collecting such data depends on consent, sample access and governance, which is where much of the work lies.
- Speciale Invest presents this as one of India’s advantages from a pre-seed investor’s perspective. That is a thesis about where defensibility may come from, not a named buyer or a demand signal.
Possible starting points
Condition-specific cohort
Build a consented dataset for one condition with a clinical partner who also needs the results.
Data readiness for existing collections
Help hospitals or research groups standardise and govern data they already hold before any model is built.
Questions to answer
- Who owns the data, and on what consent terms can it be used commercially?
- Which customer would pay for a model trained on Indian data, and for which decision?
